The Daughter He Dreamed of Before He Met Her
JC thought he was searching for the love of his life. Instead, he found two.
Before you read JC’s words, I need to warn you: this is a goosebump story.
Pull up a chair, friend. This is one of those second chance love stories that feels too powerful to call coincidence — the kind that makes you pause, look up, and wonder if something bigger had been quietly working behind the scenes all along.
After divorce, years of singleness, awkward dates, and the quiet ache of coming home to an empty house, JC was almost ready to give up on finding love. But for seven years, he kept dreaming of a little girl — not a vague image, but a daughter he somehow knew. He saw her face, heard her laugh, watched her grow, and loved her with a depth that made no logical sense.
Then one night, on the very last dating app he was about to delete, he saw Mieke.
What followed was a love story filled with divine timing, intuition, healing, and the kind of connection that gives you chills in the best possible way. It makes you wonder if heaven had been writing the introduction long before they ever met.
You can also listen to JC and Mieke share their story in their own words on Second Chances: The Best Parts are on Side B.
And now, read it in JC’s own words — the moment he thought he was looking for the love of his life…and instead, found two.
After my divorce, I did my best to take the high road. I honored my ex-wife, protected our boys’ peace, and focused on being the kind of man and father they could model themselves after. Placing a big focus on respecting women, especially their mother.
Then came seven long years of singleness, filled with awkward dates, a disastrous relationship, lots of empty dating profiles, and still returning home to an empty house.
During that time, something strange began happening.
I started dreaming of a daughter.
Not a vague image, a specific little girl. Dark hair. A huge heart. A contagious laugh. I watched her grow through the years in my dreams. I knew her face at every age. I walked her down the aisle. I loved her with a depth that made no logical sense, because in my waking life… she did not exist.
Still, the dreams persisted for seven years.
Eventually, after enough failed dates and disappointment, I gave up on finding love. One night, I opened my phone and began deleting every dating app, determined to accept a life alone.
On the very last app, Bumble, one profile caught my eye.
She was beautiful, from Queens, and somehow appeared outside my search radius. Something in me whispered, Pay attention.
Listening to the universe and my intuition, I swiped right.
She didn’t respond within the app’s 24-hour window, but for reasons I still can’t explain, I paid to extend it another day, something I had never done before. Otherwise, I’d lose her forever.
The next morning, I woke up to a simple message:
“Hi.”
That two-letter word changed my life forever.
She was from South Africa, brilliant, beautiful, and unlike anyone I had ever met. Our connection was instant. A long first call became date one, which became date two, then three, and before long, I knew with certainty: this was the woman I would marry.
Then, two weeks in, she basically moved in.
Taking note that things were moving fast, she said:
“There’s something you need to know…
She explained that her sister had tragically taken her own life and left behind a young daughter, whom she was committed to adopting as her own.
She said, “I come with a daughter.”
My throat tightened, and I started to sweat. “Is this really happening?”
“Can I see her picture?” I asked.
She handed me her phone, and when I looked down, the room tilted.
It was her.
The little girl from my dreams. The same eyes. The same smile. The same face I had seen for seven years. The daughter I had loved before I ever met her.
Trying to explain that to the woman you’ve just fallen in love with is no small task, but I told her everything. About the dreams. About watching this little girl grow in my mind. About walking her down the aisle before I ever knew her name.
I didn’t run; she didn’t run. She believed me.
A few weeks later, due to strange circumstances, I met her face-to-face for the first time.
She was eight years old, and from the moment we met, it felt less like an introduction and more like a reunion. As if we were simply picking up where we had left off.
Later, she told me something I will never forget:
She had imagined me, too.
Had I found the love of my life? No. I found two.
People say biology makes a family.
But sometimes, true love gets there first.
