Some of the most beautiful love stories don’t always arrive wrapped in perfection.

Sometimes they arrive through a blind date, they arrive with children, history, responsibility, fear, hope, and a whole lot of unknowns.

And sometimes love doesn’t just say, “I choose you.”

It says, “I choose all of this.”

That is exactly what Dan did.

When Jan and Dan met, it wasn’t love at first sight. But there was a spark — the kind that begins to wake up places in your heart you thought had gone quiet. Jan had four children. Dan had one. Then together, they added three more, creating a blended family of eight children and twenty-eight years of memories, mess, laughter, heartbreak, triumph, and love.

Twenty-eight years ago today, I said yes to a man who said yes to all of us.
Dan walked into a ready-made family —
my three boys,
my daughter,
his two-and-a-half-year-old son —
and he didn’t flinch.
He didn’t just marry me. He chose us. All of us.
He coached boys in football for eleven years.
And in Baseball.
And in Basketball.
He showed up at every single dance and cheer competition. He didn’t do it because he had to. He did it because that’s who he is.
We added three more kiddos to the chaos —
So six boys, two girls total — and built a life that’s been equal parts joy and challenge, laughter and heartbreak,
triumph and mess.
Because that’s what real families are.
Not the highlight reel.
The whole thing.
Some seasons have been harder than we ever imagined.
Some of our kids have faced battles we wouldn’t wish on anyone.
And some are thriving in ways that make our hearts burst.
All of it — every bit — has been held together by teaming up with this man who stepped up twenty-eight years ago and never stopped.
Dan, you’ve been my partner through every single piece of it.
The beautiful and the brutal.
The celebrations and the sleepless nights. You’ve loved our kids — all of them — with a fierceness that warms my heart.
I know this: I would choose you again. Every time. In every version of this messy, beautiful life.
