Before texting and cell phones, communication was a whole different game.

In the book, Kelly, Amy, Jake and his best friend attend the same school. Real life? We were RIVALS!

Debbie and I went to Wasilla High School. Bryan and Jerry went to Chugiak High School in Eagle River.

When the guys came to our dances, we had to get special permission from 'Dr. J' and put their names on an approved guest list. 😂

Add rival schools + teenage jealousy + long-distance phone calls + no texting + no way to instantly clear up a misunderstanding…

Words every 1980s high schooler understood—but today’s students might need translated:
📚 Dewey Decimal System — because finding a book once required knowing actual numbers.
⌨️ Typewriter — no delete key. No autocorrect. No mercy.
📽️ Overhead projector — and those clear transparency sheets!
📖 Encyclopedia — our internet came in 26 volumes.
☎️ Pay phone — and you better have a quarter.
📼 VHS — “Be Kind, Rewind.”
🎧 Walkman — Spotify… but you carried ONE album in your pocket.
💾 Floppy disk — and somehow it wasn’t actually floppy.
✏️ Pencil sharpener on the wall — the original classroom social break.
📝 Passing notes — our version of texting, with actual evidence. 😂
📇 Card catalog — finding a book was practically a scavenger hunt.

And heaven help you if your teacher rolled in the TV cart… because THAT meant it was going to be a good day. 🙌😂
